Which is Better for an Engagement Ring; Diamond or Ruby?

Are you thinking of popping the question to your beloved? If so, we’ve no doubt that the ring is at the forefront of your thoughts right now. But what stone should you opt for? A diamond ring? A ruby ring? A diamond and ruby engagement ring?

We know. Being faced with so much choice for such an important life moment can be slightly overwhelming. This is why we’re here to help you make an informed decision.

Diamond and ruby engagement rings: which are best?

One question we get asked a lot at Simon Wright is “are rubies good for engagement rings?” Personally, we love rubies. They’re not only attractive but they’re also incredibly hardwearing too.

In fact, rubies score a 9 out of 10 on the Moh Hardness Scale, with the only harder gemstone being the diamond, which scores 10.

Therefore, if you’re trying to choose between a diamond and a ruby ring and you’re looking for a piece of jewellery that will be worn on a daily basis yet will still be in beautiful condition to hand down to future generations, both stones are worth considering.

But - and here’s another question we get asked a lot too: “do engagement rings have to be diamond?”

Do engagement rings have to be diamonds?

While we’ll always hold a special place in our hearts for a classic diamond ring, the honest truth is, the right stone for an engagement ring is whatever makes you and your intended happiest.

There are a number of stunning alternatives to diamond engagement rings, so please don’t think you have to forsake your fiance-to-be’s favourite gemstone because you think a diamond is your only option.

For example, emerald rings are an alternative to diamonds, but ruby rings are also well worth giving some consideration to as they are equally beautiful.

Are rubies good for engagement rings?

There is absolutely no reason (well, none that we can think of anyway!) to say that engagement rings have to be diamond, and ruby engagement rings offer a unique spin on a classic proposal.

As we said above, rubies are incredibly hardwearing and they’re also one of the most valuable stones available. So if you really want to dazzle your partner, a bespoke engagement ring set with rubies is bound to impress.

But not only that, because rubies are also July’s birthstone, they make a thoughtful ring for proposing to a loved one who was born in this month.

A ruby will also make a wonderful engagement ring for anyone who loves not only the colour red, but also pink.

That’s right. While many of us think of rubies as being a deep blood-red colour, they actually come in a spectrum of red and pinky hues.

This also makes rubies particularly good for engagement rings as you can opt for a dramatically regal red ruby or a paler pretty-in-pink gemstone.

If you’re still stuck deciding between a ruby or a diamond, why not opt for both? We often recommend that a ruby is paired with some diamond accents - whether this is two either side, or a small halo of diamonds. This is because the sparkle of diamonds can help to lift the appearance of the ruby, for an all-round show-stopping ring.
