Edwardian Style Hair Clip

We love making vintage reproduction jewellery. We are usually faced with designing vintage inspired jewellery or engagement rings, but this time we had the challenge of making an Edwardian style bespoke hair clip.

Our client came to us asking to produce a vintage inspired piece of Edwardian style jewellery that they had happened upon in an antique shop. You may ask, however, why didn’t they buy an antique piece instead? There are many important factors to consider with antique pieces, such as: how well has a piece been looked after? Are the claws sturdy? Are any stones chipped or missing? Has metal been worn away?

This is where vintage reproduction jewellery comes in, and why it is becoming an increasingly popular option for people looking for antique style jewellery. It is a process that takes the best of antique styling and design, and combines it with modern technology and materials.

What Is Edwardian Jewellery?

So what exactly is Edwardian jewellery? Edwardian jewellery is typified by its use of precious gemstones and diamonds in delicate and lacy designs, in contrast to Victorian style jewellery that preceded it, which favoured brightly coloured and eye-catching colours.

It is believed that the Georgians and Victorians, and subsequently the Edwardians, helped popularise the use of hair clips as the commonplace accessories we know and love today, but that is not to say they were not used before. As far back as ancient Rome, elaborate hair pieces were used as a sign of status and power. Indeed hair clips, pins and barettes can often be found in portraits and busts of aristocratic women and royalty of centuries past.

Our client came to see us at our Clerkenwell studio where we discussed the piece and sketched out some design ideas. From there, we created a 3D model using state of the art CAD software, before going ahead and creating the final piece. We used pink sapphires alternating with white diamonds, including small diamonds set into each corner as well as subtle vintage detailing with the metal. No strangers to creating bespoke hair clips, we were really pleased with how this clip turned out, it is always exciting taking on a challenge of making something new!
