Pink Sapphire Engagement Rings: Are They Right For You?

There are many things to consider when buying an engagement ring. A question we hear a lot is, are sapphires good for engagement rings? The difference between diamond and sapphire might be obvious and diamonds may be the traditional choice (mostly because of a very clever and extremely successful marketing campaign by global diamond companies in the 1930s), but that by no means makes them the only choice.

Sapphires make a stunning choice of stone for a bespoke engagement ring, and you might be surprised to learn that sapphires aren’t always blue, either. In fact, coloured sapphire rings come in a veritable rainbow of colours, from yellow and green, through to delicate summery pastels and citrus hues.

Is pink sapphire good for engagement rings?

A lovely choice for a bespoke engagement ring is the pink sapphire. Pink sapphires range from pale blush pinks to deep magentas, and can even come with purple tones as well. The Padparadscha sapphire has an orangey-pink tone (think of the inside of a freshly-cut nectarine) and is highly sought-after for its rare beauty.

But are sapphire rings expensive? As a general rule, the deeper the colour, the more valuable the stone – but, that said, you should always choose the stone that appeals most to you, because you will continue to appreciate its beauty long after you’ve forgotten the price.

Are pink sapphire rings popular?

Pink sapphire engagement rings have grown in popularity. Not only are they beautiful and unusual, but they are also considered to hold special meaning. In many cultures, pink sapphires symbolise trust, loyalty and sincerity – similar to their more widely-known blue cousins. Pink sapphires in particular are believed to bring good fortune and intense love – perfect for a custom made engagement ring! Indeed, it is these same reasons that have seen a rise in popularity of pink sapphire eternity rings.

What should you look for in a pink sapphire engagement ring?

Buying sapphires is a lot less complicated than buying a diamond. There is no standardised colour grading system, so it’s really a question of selecting a shade of pink that appeals to you and your partner, and then considering the cut (shape) and carat (size) that will work best for your ring design. Pink sapphires lend themselves beautifully to almost any style of ring, from classically elegant vintage inspired jewellery, to geometric art deco-style designs.

Pink sapphires also make an excellent alternative to pink diamond engagement rings, which are considerably rarer and at the higher end of the price scale.

Are pink sapphires natural?

Customers often ask if pink sapphires are natural. Natural pink sapphires are sometimes heat-treated to remove purple overtones. This is a common, accepted practice and doesn’t change the integrity of the stone, but if you want an entirely natural, untreated stone, know that these are much rarer.

What ring band style should I choose for a pink sapphire engagement ring?

Because pink sapphires come in such a wide variety of shades, different stones will be better suited to different precious metals, to really bring out the beauty in their unusual tones. For example, a pink sapphire with orange undertones can be beautifully highlighted in a rose gold setting, whereas a soft pastel pink could be overwhelmed by rose gold, and might stand out best in a white gold setting.

We recommend that once you’ve chosen your stone, you spend some time in our studio to see how it looks alongside platinum, white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold. There’s really no substitute for what you can see with your own eye, with good natural lighting.

Who do pink sapphire engagement rings suit?

Well, you may agree that we’re a little biased, but we think they suit everybody!

The wonderful thing about pink sapphires is that because they come in such a rich spectrum of colours, you can find one to suit any skin tone and any personal style. Pink sapphires are rare enough to attract “oohs” and “aahs” when you show off your bespoke engagement ring, while being elegant enough that they will look just as beautiful in many years’ time.

Blending the modern and the classic, the bold and the delicate, pink sapphires make a deeply romantic and out-of-the-box choice for an engagement ring. Ask us about getting up close and personal with these beautiful stones, to find a colour that is sure to get a “yes”.
